I sell Hornby Hobbies Limited products, this section of the website being their Airfix range of plastic kits. Although I have only been accredited as a dealer in 2019 I have been using Airfix products since 1962. In comparison with other shops I would not expect to instantly hold large stocks but would hope to offer a simple ordering service at an attractive price.

Airfix was not britain's first firm to produce plastic kits. Although there were several alternatives in the uk such as Frog (part of Rovex and hence owned by Tri-ang) together with much smaller firms including Kitmaster (with a small but interesting range of OO railway models) and Impact the main competition came from the americans, principally Revell (who produced some models specifically for the british and european markets), Monogram (my favourite for general fit, surface finish and chroming), Aurora, Lindberg, AMT, MPC, Jo-Han,Renwal, Life-Like plus of course the later Riko (Richard Kohnstam) imports from Japan with the (now ubiquitous) Tamiya products plus Bandai, Otaki and others. Within the UK it has to be said that Airfix were dominant. Although they produced some models that to my mind were strange choices I think they knew their market. Along with this they had a major strength in that from day one they settled on the scales that their ranges would use. This was unusual at the time and if you look at the older american catalogues the scales would vary all over the place, it being unusual for a scale to be quoted but rather an overall length or width. The exception to this were the car kits, where the american automotive manufacturers would order up hundreds if not thousands of 1:25 and 1:24 "promotional models" (simplified with regard to common later kits with basic interior but ready assembled with appropriate factory paint schemes and exterior brightwork) which were distributed to their dealerships to demonstrate "in the flesh" the shape and two-tone colours of cars that they could order.

With companies coming and going or simply changing direction it has been common for some kit moulds to "do the rounds". Airfix has a far greater back catalogue than their last few years of catalogues show and with certain designs being replaced with more detailed versions, the old moulds might be handed on. If you have an interest in OO/HO railways then you will probably be aware that the whole Airfix railway range (some of which might have originated with Kitmaster) went to Dapol. I may as well also mention the "quickbuild" models, if the name suggests to you that they are like the click assembly entry level kits that were common in the 1980s you would in fact be correct but the assembly concept is akin to Lego and Cobi whilst having surfaces with far more accurate proportions and a pleasing lack of protruding studs compared to other brands. In particular I think that the Volkswagen camper van makes an interesting model with the interior detail visible. The Spitfire and Mustang fighters also appear to be well proportioned and with a sensible range on the coloured parts. Perhaps an alternative for those who are in to "bricks" and youngsters who (you) might not want to be bothered with glue?

Given my current location it would be unfair not to mention Heller and indeed the building kits that were in the Jouef catalogue. Nor would I forget the wide range of building kits produced by the likes of Faller, Vollmer, Kibri, Pola, Heljan and other european firms which still provide major support to railway modellers and wargamers alike.

At it's height Airfix had its fingers in many plastic-toy pies, but outside the model kits they are best remembered for their MRRC 1:32 scale slot cars which were in full competition with Scalextric (Veron's smaller scale VIP range and Tri-ang's OO scale Minic motorways filling different niches). Certain of their models were in advance of Scalextric, the ferguson FF (4wd single seater) being an example whilst some of their sets such as the Monte Carlo with cardboard supports for a twisty alpine with circuit with Mini Coopers was good value for the length of track.

I order on a roughly fortnightly basis. If the items are in stock at the warehouse it will probably take a week to reach me and another week in the post before it is due to be delivered to you. It must therefore be understood that there could be a four week delay before delivery. In some instance it might be quicker but you should not rely on that. If this delay is not acceptable then please do not place an order.

I am trading under the Micro Entrepreneur regime, I pay the equivalent of TVA/VAT sales tax up-front when I buy goods and I can not exempt this for any purchasers who might be TVA/VAT registered.

A further comment on postage costs: I am initially having to guess at the likely cost of posting single items. I would agree that adding in a duplicate item ought not to double the cost however I am having to make a choice within the options of the Paypal shopping cart and have defaulted to the method where there is no postage discount for multiple items (which worked for my previous web shops where multiple item purchases were not that common). If you are buying lots of compact and lightweight items then I can either offer to refund the excess postage or, if you prefer to pay the correct amount in the first instance, send me an email with your items and I can then make a specific invoice for that bundle.

Although, as a dealer, I have full access to the Hornby Hobbies image bank I have been surprised to see that many items in the Airfix catalogue do not have individual stock images to download although images may well exist within their printed and on-line or downloadable catalogues. If the web pages on this site do not show pictures of an item that you are interested in and want to view an image then may I suggest that you search within the catalogues or alternatively see what your preferred internet search engine pulls up. Hornby do not seem to have produced specific Airfix videos but there are several "technique" videos in the Humbrol section.

You should also understand that some of the older items in the catalogues will be out of production whilst newer ones may not yet have been produced.
